Production Obstacles

19/11

We had forgotten that the opening sequence at night time so we had problems with getting the lighting correct to make it as though it is night time but with we had a few difficulties because sometimes it was too dark or it was obvious that it was daylight so we had to change the plot slightly. However the filming took longer than we had anticipated. We were planning on getting back before break time but ended up getting back to school almost end of 3rd period. We had a few issues with the cab as the company increased the price so then we ended up paying more than last time to get back to school. We also asked for a 7 seater as we had a wheelchair and the first taxi arrived with a 5 seater so we had to wait longer for the right taxi which made us get even more late to school.
Another difficulty we had whilst recording was that Trinesh was finding it quite hard to get in focus which kept on making everyone laugh, this also delayed more time.

22/11

We had imported the video clips that we had taken onto the computer and also saved it onto a hard drive, so that we had it backed up if anyone in the group was absent and we had done the work on their user name we could still access it or if we had any problem with the computer and if it had crashed out on us we had back up.

26/11

We uploaded our work and firstly opened  it onto i movie so that our clips came into smaller sections so that it was easier to edit on final cut. Whilst watching our clips, there was a problem with the tape, this had effected the first few shots that we had taken, they had lines running through the top, middle and bottom. Re watching these shots we felt that the synopsis of the film that we planned didn't really match the theme thriller.

Production Successes

18/11

Today we had to borrow all the filming equipment that we needed including the wheelchair for the filming tomorrow. We had to order a cab to take all the equipment to my house, this was because we had a lot of equipment for me to take to my house by myself and the wheelchair was really old so were unable to fold it.

19/11

Instead of everyone going to school in the morning everyone in our group came straight to my house at  8.30 to start recording, i texted Ms Flavel letting her know that everyone had arrived so that we all got   a mark on our attendance. We got all our shots done as we planned, as we originally planned our filming to do in night time we made the room dark to make it appear as though it was night, and then we made the second part of the opening in the daylight. We have managed our time well and we our on point on our schedule.

This storyboard outlines the clips of the movie that our group intends to record. Each shot is taken using a wide variety of shots. These are the first few shots that our group intend to film. Our sequence starts with a boy on the wheelchair who's eyes start to close off. From here the camera shot we plan use is the close up shot of the boy fast asleep.
From here on our group has decided to open and record a new sequence of the boy dreaming where most part of the film will be recorded in the "Dream Sequence".

Dream sequence 5-9

From here on we will be filming the sequence of the boy dreaming. This will show shots of the boy moving towards the window in his room with the help of his wheelchair. Here he will see a girl where the camera shot will be a long shot. Here he will not see the face of the girl but may see it as he moves onto the next scene which will be a house next door to his.
The next scene will require the camera shot moving from the one person to another. This will include the camera behind the girl and moving towards a boy next to her and this shot will allow us to see the boy on the wheelchair too.
From here the camera has a close-up shot on the boys shoes walking around the room.

The fifth shot includes a wide shot which allows the audience to see the whole room of the mysterious man to create a sense of tension although the boy on the wheelchair will still be able to be seen.
From here on the next scene starts where the boy immediately wakes up from his sleep with the extreme-close-up camera shot near the boys eyelids opening up. From here on, the scene will start back inside the boys room and repeat what he had seen in his dream.

Ending sequence shots 10-13

The ending sequence starts here where the boy repeats the same movements as he saw in his dream. When he gets close to the window the camera shot will show the reaction of the boy where the camera and sequence will stop which will maybe be a close up shot

Screen play

SCREENPLAY

LOCATION 1: HARRY'S room. It has a large window with a view of the street, including MR. KARK'S
house. The room should be slightly messy so that it can coincide with the stereotypical room
teenager.

LOCATION 2: MR KARK'S living room. It should be extremely tidy and have all the normal things that
anybody's living room would have. This is representative of his character; seems completely
normal on the outside but hides deep and disturbing secrets.

LOCATION 3: The street on which the houses which are involved are on.

LOCATION 1-NIGHT
HARRY is in his wheelchair and the camera zooms in as he falls asleep.

3.2 Analysis of two opening sequences in thriller genre.

3.2 Synopsis

A wheelchair bound, teenage boy, begins to have disturbing dreams of female characters and his neighbour. Only to wake up to see the exact same women walking into the house accompanied by the neighbour. He then begins to keep tabs on the neighbour using a video camera to record his findings. Though danger seems to creep his way, as subtlety is not his strong point because they neighbour begins to become suspicious of someone watching him. As he cannot get solid evidence on his camera alone, he get his friend to help him, as she can get nearer to the neighbours house.  The neighbour is a serial killer, the teenager spends days making a diary of his findings see little things that can just LOOK wrong. Such as stroking females faces in a sinister way as they shiver away, or him looking towards a door and then backing away cautiously, or even some of them apparently “fainting”. However appearing like some fishy is going on isn’t enough to convict a man. It is obvious that this dark sinister man is up to no good, but is too clever to get caught. So in desperation for convicting evidence, the teenage girl breaks into the house with the camera. The film turns nasty as she is caught as the neighbour returns, now the....

3.1.1 About the filming and editing process

The second time we had started recording we had booked it in the recording studio, we had barely any time to record as another group had booked the recording studio too, so we had to split the time. Resulting us with our shots being unfinished.
Luckily we found a third setting for our exercise, it was one of the teachers office, we were able to re-record the whole play again and get all the shots correctly without breaking the 180 degree rule. We finally got ourselves together, fully organized which left us a brilliant result.
The main keys that i thought were to be the most important whilst filming is to be organized and each person in the group has their own role and know what they are doing. I also learnt that making sure you have the all the right equipment such as the Mic and boom was very important to have as without it, it was very quiet and you can barely hear anything, which lead us to recording again leaving us with less time to edit.

 Point of view shot
This one of the first shots we began with, this was meant to be in the view of Jessie(Georgina) going to walk in for her interview. I like this shot as it makes the audience feel nervous as they are going for the interview so they can feel how Jessie is feeling.

Medium two shot
This shot shows two characters in the frame, as we don't need to cut shots as each character is talking. This shot allows the audience to see both characters together for a side view so we can see how both of the characters expression and gestures are and to feel more of the atmosphere.

Over the shoulder shot of Niel(Bob)

Over the shoulder shot of Georgina (Jessie)
We used the over the shoulder shot and switched it from each character to give it a dramatic effect allowing the audience to see the characters from both prospective.

Match on action
This is the start of the match on action, a long shot of me as a random person walking round the corner, to show a cut of the settings which helps the audience to understand what is going on better.

last shot of match on action.
This is a wide shot of Georgina walking in the same direction that i did, i personally think this is a good example of match on action. As we stuck to the 180 degree rule.
The editing and final cut process
To edit our recording we used final cut, its a professional software which is brilliant for editing films, it has many effects to help edit our preliminary exercise.
Ive already had some experience using final cut in the past as i did GCSE media and had used the software final cut to edit my advertisement. In our lesson we had a quick recap on the basics of using Final cut and I Movie HD we learnt how to split the recording into sections using IMovie HD , and We also learnt how to add in titles and slide effects and cutting out sections we didn't need using Final Cut.
We firstly began with plugging the camera into the computer and opened IMovie HD which cut our clips into sections so we didn't have a large clip in final cut. We then started editing and adding titles, and cutting out parts we didn't need and putting the clips into the correct place as we had many repeated clips as we recorded 3 times. I found it quite simple and straight forward to edit using final cut pro.

3.1 What i learnt by doing the construction preliminary exercise

During this exercise i had worked with Georgina, Niel and Abderahim. The aim of this exercise was to film a character walking across the room, portraying the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action.

We had decided on a story line which was a girl called Jessie (whom Georgina played) was going for an school teacher job interview taken by the head of the school, Bob (played by Niel). My job during this exercise was the sound and props, i had to make sure that the characters were dressed appropriately for the story line and get the props together, also to find a setting for us to record. I also helped Abderahim get the shots correct as he was recording.
Firstly we had recorded in the library office, it was going pretty well. I had learnt how to do all of these shots using a camera although we had broken the 180 degree rule. looking back at our recording i was quite impressed with shots that we had as they were correct the only problem was that whilst we were recording we didn't have a mic as there was none left, leaving our group with no choice but to record again as you could hear hardly nothing.

Technology and camera
Using the camera i learnt it was important to make sure that you test the camera first to see if it works properly, also to make sure that the battery is fully charged. I also learnt that making sure you have the all the right equipment such as the Mic and boom was very important to have as without it, it was very quiet and you can barely hear anything, which was what had happened to us and led us to recording again leaving us with less time to edit.
